HOT TIPS FOR
SPECTACULAR
PHOTOS
So, you’ve never planned a wedding before? That's usually the case!
Planning can be SO overwhelming, and timing can be super tricky as every wedding is so unique!
If you’re still in your early planning stages, I have a few tips that will help set you up for the best photography outcome possible!
TIP ONE - timing
Always allow a LOT more time for each part of your day than you think you need. If there is any day that you don’t want to feel rushed, or stressed, this is that day. Rushing through the photography and intimate moments can really put a dampener on the mood and result in less spectacular photos. If you allow too much free time - no worries! You can always use it to relax & soak in the excitement of the day!
If you care a lot about the photography, ensure to allow a solid chunk of time both before & after the ceremony to dedicate to photos! Plan to be dressed & ready at least an hour before leaving for your ceremony. This gives plenty of time for individual portraits, shots with family, friends & time to relax before leaving. Many brides forget little details when they are rushing! Even I forgot to put my necklace on before my ceremony whilst caught up in the moment!
After the ceremony, try to allow an hour for newlywed photos - these are the most important & romantic photos of the entire day! Ensure that any driving/meal times are not within in that hour so we have plenty of time to get creative & you can both spend some time together and relax. If you are looking for ideas on where to go for these photos, I’d suggest thinking about any places that hold a special place in your heart. Where you went on your first date, where you shared your first kiss, a place you both love going together! If you need any advice regarding your timeline be sure to get in touch!!
TIP two- lighting
Good lighting is the key to stunning images. I cannot stress this enough. It can make such an impact on the overall vibe & magic in the air. Golden hour, has the best potential for magazine-worthy soft lighting & warm glows which make a huge difference. Golden hour = the hour before sunset. This is hands-down the BEST time for photography, try to do your portraits around then! Also, try to avoid the the midday sun for your ceremony if possible - harsh shadows can be very hard to combat. No-one wants to be squinting in full sunlight or have shadows on their face!
Make sure to check the sunset times for your exact date whilst planning. Summer VS winter is very different. Have you been to your ceremony location and seen it at that time of day? Will the sun be shining directly in your face, will there be shadows from a nearby tree or building across the altar? These things are crucial to be aware of - I know it's overwhelming if you've never had to think about these things before, but that's where I'm here to help.
If you plan your ceremony for late afternoon, make sure there will still be plenty of light afterwards for newlyweds portraits. If not, we can opt for a first look and portrait session before the ceremony. There are plenty of great options to ensure the lighting is great - make sure to check with me before locking in specific times if you are unsure!
TIP THREE- opportunities
Some couples choose give each other a gift or letter to open in the morning, which make for beautiful, emotional photos. A morning toast with the girls, cigars for the boys, post-ceremony confetti & champagne towers are great photo opportunities. So are games & sparklers at the end of the night, they make for such fun memories too! The more you have planned, the more variety of photos you’ll receive from me.
Make sure you don't get dressed until after we arrive, the little details & final touches play an important part of capturing the entire story! Ask your parents to get ready before you, so they are ready to be photographed helping you get ready. Incredible florals & a stunning bouquet can make your photos truly level up, so make sure to find a florist who reflects your style & specialises in events!
It sounds obvious, but the prettier the background, the prettier and more special the photos are! Many couples choose to get ready in Airbnb’s or hotel rooms to ensure good lighting & less clutter than the family home may have! It can also help you to feel calm & relaxed, and make it feel like a more significant day! If you get overwhelmed easily, try not to have too many people around while you get ready. Try to stick with only your bridal party & closest family to avoid too much commotion!
Hot tip for your reception - nobody and I mean NOBODY wants their photo taken at the table whilst they shove food into their mouth! If your budget allows, ask your stylist to set up a small, dedicated ‘photo area’ for fun group shots! Think draped fabric, some flowers & a funky chair. Professionally shot & edited images will be much classier than having a photobooth there, these photos will be elegant and beautiful, and be kept by guests for a lifetime.
Some inspiration for a STUNNING photobooth!
Trust me, they’ll make for the prettiest reception photos!
